Hastate Design is a passionate planting design specialist

Hastate Design Studio Edinburgh Garden Design

design principle

We embrace the already existing living elements of your garden and simply edit and enhance them. We work with nature and we accept its dynamics and mechanisms.

By gentle editing of the existing planting and by adding carefully researched plants, we create naturalistic, perennial rich garden designs, that provide interest all year round and are low maintenance.  To achieve this, we bring our unique knowledge of plants, experience, passion and artistic sensitivity to your garden design project.

design process

We encourage dialogue with our clients. We learn, educate and collaborate.

Our sensitive approach to planting design uses research, sketches, drawings, collages, to communicate our shared ideas and shape the conversation.

This approach also helps our clients to visualise how their project will evolve over time.

We believe that by bringing together people with different skill sets, knowledge, and experiences, we build a truly nurturing and productive work environment.

founder

Kornelia, the founder of Hastate Design, has a background in history, art curation and illustration.

Her love of learning led her to study horticulture at the SRUC in Edinburgh, where she developed a keen interest in garden and planting design.

Kornelia was awarded best second year student and received the Silver Medal of Excellence from the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, RHASS on the completion of her HND studies in Horticulture.

She has been involved in several planting projects for public spaces in Edinburgh, one of which was a planting improvement project for a garden surrounding the Collective Gallery on Calton Hill.

She also completed an internship at the Greywalls Hotel in Gullane, Scotland, where the garden was designed by Gertrude Jekyll. At Greywalls Kornelia worked alongside the head gardener, where she learned a great deal about the work involved in preserving such an historic garden.

Kornelia discovered that planting design is a great medium to express her artistic side as well as allowing for constant learning and knowledge development. This encouraged her to create Hastate Design, a planting design business with strong ethos and design principles.

Kornelia is very passionate about creating unique planting designs. She believes that with the current concerns about the environment, our gardens need to become more diverse and rich ecosystems. To achieve this, we need a more varied range of plants in our gardens and this ethos is reflected in the planting designs Kornelia creates for her clients.
