festive planting
inspired by a woodland

brief:
Creating planting for a number of planters at the front of the luxury 5-star hotel in Edinburgh.
Our festive planting design was created for the Gleneagles Townhouse, situated in the heart of Edinburgh, on St Andrew Square.
The planting design was created and executed in mid-November 2022.
The theme of this planting was inspired by a woodland.
We gently enhanced the existing planting by adding various evergreen structures and textures by incorporating ferns, small pine trees, cypresses and ornamental grasses.
A beautiful pop of pink and red colour was achieved by planting Gaultheria (Checkerberry) and Pernettya (Prickly heath), both produce small, round berries.
Moreover, small Nandina domestica (Sacred bamboo) plant, with subtle tints of red on its foliage, brought more colour interest into this planting.
It was important for us to add eye catching flowers to further enhance this planting design.
We selected Helleborus niger, also called the Rose of Noel. It has pure,
white-green, anemone-like large flowers, which are clearly visible from a distant.
This flower added more vibrancy and seasonal interest to this planting.
What is fascinating about the Hellebore plant is that the flowers go through a very elegant and subtle transition - the white petals turn gently green. They do not darken or turn brown. It was an important element when thinking about the planting design for this project.
