a complete planting design project

We can help you transform your garden by selecting suitable range of plants that will thrive in your space.

Whether we design a completely new planting area, update an existing border, or create a planter, we believe that there is a plant for every garden situation.

Our strap line: gardens gently edited captures our design approach for existing gardens, meaning we gradually introduce new plants and gently edit what is already present.  With our gentle editing approach in mind we can help you transform your already existing garden space.

the design process

step one: initial conversation

We would like to meet you in person and see your garden.

During this face-to-face onsite consultation, we can discuss in more detail your ideas, your needs and vision for the space, as well as your budget.

We will assess the space and collect the information we need about your site.

After the site visit we will send you initial ideas for the planting design for your garden. We will also give you a rough idea about the cost of the planting design service for your garden project.

step two: concept design

If you decide that you want to move to the next stage of the project, if needed, we will visit your garden again to collect more detailed measurements.

We will then create a concept design for your garden, based on all the information we have collected.

The concept design will include sketches, collages, mood boards, notes and suggested plant palette.

At this point we will be able to give you more detailed quote for the whole planting design project.

why work with Hastate Design

We deliver planting designs that feel in tune with nature and its cycles. We achieve this by combining our experience, unique knowledge of plants and artistic sensitivity.

Our naturalistic planting designs are inspired by natural environments, which mimic the patterns and layouts found in nature. For us it is very important to watch and learn from natural habitats.

We mainly work with perennial plants. This is because of their longevity and their changing appearance over the seasons, which makes the gardens we design interesting all year round.

  • It is the process of selecting and combining plants for the garden.
It requires both artistic flair and plant knowledge to choose the right plants.

  • Planting design is important because through our research and investigation, we can ensure  the plants selected will thrive in combination and in the specific conditions of the garden, where they will reside.

Planting design also considers how plants will change over time. Plants are living beings, they are dynamic, they adapt and change.

  • When selecting plants for a garden it is crucial to consider if the plant will respond well to the climate of the garden.

Choose plants that will thrive in the conditions of your garden (sunny, shade, sandy soil, bog).

It is important to understand the seasonality of each plant, as well as how the selected plants will look in a couple of years.

  • Perennial plants are known for their longevity.
As the name perennial suggests, these plants come back year after year.

Planting more perennials in your garden will create a fascinating array of colours and structures that will provide you with an interesting and dynamic visual experience across all seasons.

  • Reduce the areas for hardscape elements and try to increase the amount of space that is allocated for planting perennial plants.

When thinking about a sustainable planting design it is important to look carefully at the soil and work with it.

Sustainable planting design should also focus on the types of plants that will come back year after year. The best examples are perennial plants.

Kornelia is a pleasure to work with - she listened carefully to what we were wanting to achieve, provided lots of information on the various plants being used and provided a fully illustrated planting design. We are delighted with the results and would highly recommend Hastate Design.
