planting design for the entrance to the Aberdour Golf Course, Fife, Scotland
brief:
To create attractive planting design at the entrance to the golf course. The plants selected are creating an ever-changing display of colours and textures, making the entrance welcoming and interesting across the changing seasons.
We created a planting design for two areas at the entrance to the Aberdour Golf Course, Fife.
It was important to select plants that are drought tolerant and easy to maintain.
Two planting areas are positioned higher above the road level, hence some plants that we selected are quite tall, making a clear visual impact when driving up towards the entrance, these are : Verbena hastata, Dianthus carthusianorum, Achillea 'Coronation Gold' and ornamental grass Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’.
Like with every planting design, we incorporate a selection of plants that act as a ground cover. This is a very important feature of our designs, as we want to protect the soil, stop the moisture evaporation and erosion. Selecting low growing, ground covering plants also stops undesired plants (weeds) to grow. For this particular design the plants that act as a ground cover are: Stachys byzantina, Persicaria affinis 'Darjeeling Red', Persicaria affinis 'Superba', Prunella gran. 'Bella Rose'.
It was also important to select plants that will add colour and structure during autumn and winter time. We selected some asters and sedums for autumn colour. Moreover, the spent, dried flowers and seed heads of Achilleas and Dianthus add another dimension into these two pocket gardens.
The plants selected provide a variety of colours, textures and shapes across the seasons, making it a beautiful welcome to the golf course’s visitors at any time of the year. These plantings also encourage wildlife into the area.
project review from the client:
“Kornelia’s project at Aberdour Golf Club moved to its second phase with two stunningly designed flower beds at the car park entrance - what a welcome she has created - a well thought through palette of plants, exploding with colour and filling the beds perfectly - a fantastic addition to the amazing plants around the outside seating space - come and see it ….”
